Bruins vs. Rangers NHL Pick – February 7th

Last night we split our four picks 2-2, however we dropped a modest 0.38 units in the process. The Boston Bruins got the night started off on the right foot with their 3-2 regulation win over the Red Wings. Next was the Winnipeg Jets who, despite a late siege from Arizona, held on for a 4-3 regulation win over the Coyotes. However, the rest of the evening didn’t go as planned. The St. Louis Blues were thoroughly beaten on their home turf by the rival Minnesota Wild by a 6-2 score. Lastly, the San Jose Sharks couldn’t muster much offense at all as they dropped a 3-1 decision to the Colorado Avalanche. Those two losses are extremely disappointing. The Wild are one of the worst road teams in the NHL and the Avalanche were without both Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen and the Sharks just couldn’t get anything going offensively. Nevertheless we will look to get back into profit-taking on tonight’s small slate with our lone Free NHL Pick featuring the Bruins vs. Rangers.

Bruins vs. Rangers NHL Pick – February 7th

OUR PICK: UNDER 5.5 (+100)       *Risking 1 unit to win 1 unit*

It’s an Original Six rivalry game tonight on Broadway as the New York Rangers host the white-hot Boston Bruins.

The Bruins have dominated the rest of the NHL for the better part of two months, going 17-1-4 over their last 22 contests. They have vaulted up the rankings in many categories, and while that also includes ranking third with 3.22 goals per game on the road, they’ve also become the league’s very best defense as well. Boston now paces the NHL with just 2.37 goals against per game, a number that rises to just 2.43 on the road (3rd). Of course, Tuukka Rask and his insane 21-game point streak has something to do with that, but Rask will give way to backup Anton Khudobin for tonight’s contest on back-to-back nights. Khudobin has been up to the task when called upon this year, producing a 2.36 GAA and a .924 Sv% on the season. On the road, Khudobin has been even better as he sports a 2.02 GAA and a .938 Sv% away from TD Garden. Over his last six starts, the veteran backup has posted a spectacular .939 Sv%.

The Rangers on the other hand have scuffled lately as they remain on the outside of the playoff picture looking in. Their problems have been at both ends of the ice recently, but they have really struggled to generate offense as of late. Over their last seven games, New York has averaged just 2.14 goals per game. I don’t imagine things get any easier for the blueshirts as they go up against the NHL’s top defense tonight. While the Rangers have struggled on the back end lately, that trend was broken in Monday’s 2-1 loss in Dallas. The Rangers snapped a series of poor defensive efforts while Henrik Lundqvist did just the same. After four consecutive poor showings, Lundqvist was dynamite for the Rangers on Monday while turning aside 39 of 41 Stars shots in the tough-luck loss. After playing six of their last seven on the road, the Rangers will be happy to return home tonight where they have been much better defensively. They yield 3.42 goals per game on the road (27th), but just 2.62 per game at home, good for 13th. The Rangers also sport a rock-solid penalty kill at home with an 85% kill rate at Madison Square Garden, good for seventh.

With the Bruins sporting the NHL’s best defense and the reliable Henrik Lundqvist returning to form in his last start, we will roll with the UNDER 5.5 tonight at a very nice price.
